ORADOUR-SUR-GLANE
On June 10, 1944, the small French village of Oradour-sur-Glane was destroyed. An event ostensibly triggered by the killing of an SS officer, the savagery and extent of the German response remains inexplicable. In a few hours, 642 men, women and children were murdered, their village plundered, then burned.
Sixty years later, nature has done much to soften the scene. Only the sturdiest traces of human activities remain: soot-blackened stone walls, fragments of rusted machines, the puddle of a melted church bell. Ten years after a visit, I continue to ponder my memories of this solemn and melancholy place. These artworks are the visual result.
